The words fireplace mantel and fireplace surround are often interchangeable. A mantel can be just the top shelf above the fireplace. A mantel can also be an entire kit that is comprised of the top shelf and areas on the side. This is especially true with ornate mantel kits that contain intricately carved mantel shelf and surround sides.

There are many types of premade mantel and surround kids that you can purchase and add to your fireplace. The important thing to keep in mind are the measurements. When you measure correctly you ensure that you will have a perfect fit and when it comes to fireplaces it needs to be done correctly for safety purposes.

When measuring first measure the width of the inside of the firebox and then the height of the inside of the firebox. Then you’ll want the web of the tile marble or brick from the outside edge to the outside edge. Then you’ll want the height of the tile marble or brick from the floor to the hearth. You will also need to adapt of the tile marble or brick from the wall. You will also need the width from the inside of the opening to the outside of the tile or marble on each side of the fire pit and from the top of the fire pit. You will also need to distance from the nearest obstruction on each side of the surround. Plus The distance from the outside edge of the tile marble or brick to the end of the hearth on each side of the fire pit. Then all you need is the depth, width, and height, of the hearth and the distance from the floor of the firebox to the top of the hearth.

Having correct measurements is very important and usually the manufacturer of whatever mantel or surround kit you order will give you detailed instructions on how to measure correctly. The measurement may be the most important part but the fun part is actually choosing a style. You can go with an antique style, and ornately carved style, or even a rest the timber style. I have even seen concrete fireplace surrounds that resemble a work of art more than a fireplace mantel.

The size of your fire surround will depend upon the size of the fire pit and any obstructions that would prevent the mantel from being a certain length. When it comes to style, materials, and the general design you are only limited by your imagination and your pocketbook. When designing a fireplace and choosing fireplace accessories is the same as remodeling is your choice and your design.
