When choosing a fireplace surround you want to combine the perfect look and function to complement your room. This can be as simple as adding a mantel to your plain fireplace or creating a custom fireplace surround. You can even have added function by adding book shelves or an entertainment center.

It is easy to dress up your fireplace there are many fireplace surround kits available. My favorite is the white wooden mantel and surround. It adds a touch of style and class to a plain fireplace and can really dress up a room.
If you like rich woods then a dark wood mantel is a nice choice. These look especially nice with an antique fireplace surround.
Another great look are the new stone styles. You can get a granite fireplace surround, or even marble, limestone, or slate. Once you know the material, style, and color you are interested in then the fun begins.
You can hire a contractor or do it yourself. The most important aspect of doing it yourself is measuring correctly. You also need to check all of the local fire codes and make sure your new addition to your fireplace is safe and up to code.
