The words fireplace mantel and fireplace surround are often interchangeable. A mantel can be just the top shelf above the fireplace. A mantel can also be an entire kit that is comprised of the top shelf and areas on the side. This is especially true with ornate mantel kits that contain intricately carved mantel shelf and surround sides.
